Advance Healthcare Directives
An Advance Directive is a document that provides for decision-making in the future about your healthcare needs if you are unable to make those decisions yourself. There are two types of Advance Directives
This traditional document is a legal directive that states what actions you would like taken on your behalf in certain healthcare situations. Most often this covers the decision on whether or not you would like to continue medical intervention in a terminal or life-threatening medical situation. The physician in charge of your care interprets your instructions based on the Living Will document. In this case, your family does not have a role in determining your care.
Durable Power of Attorney
The Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care allows you to name an agent to act as decision maker on your behalf in medical situations. Your designee will have the ability to make decisions about whether to have care provided or withheld from you, so this person should be carefully selected based on shared values and understanding. We advise that you make sure this person is comfortable making such decisions for you in advance of drawing up this document.
We are happy to go over these or other possible choices, such as a combination of the two for different circumstances, for your Advance Directive for your healthcare needs so that you can make the most informed decision, one that will give you satisfaction that your own wishes will be carried out.
